SEO or search engine optimization refers to the techniques that are performed on a website that actually influence its position on search engines. SEO is broadly categorized into two, onpage seo and off-page seo. I am going to talk about on-page seo in this article.

On-Page Search Engine Optimization

  1. Page titles

A page title is a very crucial seo ranking factor. Each individual page should basically have its unique page title. You should always use keywords on the page title. This way your web page is more likely to appear on search engine results pages based on those keywords.

on-page-seo

For instance if your blog is about children toys, you could choose ‘children toys’ and use it in the page title. This means if someone searched for children toys in a search engine, your blog would be more likely to show up just because you included those keywords on the title.

2.  Metadescriptions

Many people actually forget to include metadescriptions for their pages. They are essentially included in the search results when your website is listed. It is advisable to use keywords as part of the description. This way the your listing on google becomes relevant to the keywords you have choosen.

3.  Meta Tags

Each of your pages should contain a set of keywords in the meta tag relevant to their content. Google uses Meta tags to have an idea of what your website is all about. I personally use keyword planner research tool which is Google’s free online keyword research tool.

4. URL structure

Including seo friendly urls for all of your pages is highly recommended. Besides using keywords as part of your url helps a lot in terms of search rankings. Short urls also work better compared to long urls.

For example example.com/keyword would rank higher than example.com/123/884/subfolder/3.html.

5. Body Tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, etc)

It is quite important to break up the content of your articles into sections and paragraphs. This is achieved by utilizing the header tags (h1, h2, h3, etc). This way it becomes pretty easier for search engines to understand the important sections of your article. As a matter of fact Google puts more authority on content that is human readable and friendly. As you can see in this article I have broken up my content using paragraphs and headers.

Always try to use keywords as part of your page headers.

6. Keyword density

Including relevant content throughout your content is very important. However, it is advisable to not overdo it as Google would consider this as keyword staffing and ban your website from its index.

7. Images

Always include images within your content. Use keywords to name them. Also do not forget to include keywords on the image alt tag. This improves your overall website ranking.

8. Internal Linking

Interlinking your content internally serves as a great signal about how your website content is related in front of search engines. Internal links basically enable crawlers to easily move from one page to the other hence speeding up indexing process.

If this is done correctly, your site would be highly ranked on search engines.

Bottom line

On-page seo is very crucial for website owners. It is one of the factors that search engine use to determine your website’s position on search results. If done well it would immensely contribute to kyour overall seo performance.
